Overview
Bancroft Press has published independent books since 1992. It came to us to sell the hardcover of Michelle Lerner's memoir, A Series of Opinionated Animals, directly to readers: the story of an animal-law pioneer and the rescued animals who reshaped her life.
The memoir carries a promise. When readers buy through one of Bancroft's animal-protection partners, they save 15%, and the partner receives 20% of what Bancroft receives on the sale. The store had to make that promise work, and be simple enough for Bancroft's own team to run.
The challenge
The brief was a single-product store for the hardcover, live and tested ahead of the book's October on-sale date.
Beyond sales, one part had to work, not just look good: when a reader buys through a partner organization's page or link, that organization must be credited, so Bancroft can pay its share each quarter. Readers should not have to remember a code, and refunds must come back off a partner's total.
After handoff, the store would be run day to day by a member of Bancroft's team with no Shopify experience. Final sign-off depended on every row of the client's test-order checklist passing.
The approach
- 01Used Shopify's own discount codes for attribution instead of a custom affiliate app. Each partner gets a page and a link that applies its 15% code automatically, and orders export by code for quarterly reporting.
- 02Built the partner page as a template, so adding an organization is a duplicate-and-edit task rather than development work.
- 03Configured refunds to reverse a partner's share in reporting, so quarterly payments stay accurate.
- 04Built the book page as a template too, so the next title needs no rebuild.
- 05Ran every test order in the client's checklist, then handed over with a written guide and a live walkthrough.
Inside the store
A tour of what we built.
- 01
Partners credited, automatically
Readers who buy the memoir through a partner organization's page or link get 15% off without typing a code, and the partner receives 20% of what Bancroft receives on the sale, paid quarterly. The store explains the programme, names the partners and invites new organizations to apply.

- 02
Briefed for one book, built for more
The book page and homepage card are templates. When Bancroft added Great American Presidents, it became a second card and a second book page with no rebuild, and the next title will follow the same way.

- 03
A book page built to convert
Readers choose hardcover or ebook, see the price split into installments with Shop Pay or Klarna, and know when the book ships. A sticky bar keeps the order button in reach as they read on.

- 04
Everything a reader checks before buying
Highlights of what is inside the book, a specification row for format, length, publisher and distributor, and the full description and author biography in panels that open on demand.

- 05
Praise where it persuades
Critical reception leads on the homepage with a review carousel and a press strip, and every book page closes with a grid of endorsements from authors, critics and public figures.

- 06
Authors as the draw
Author profiles carry the credentials that sell these books, from election forecasting to animal-law reform, and link each author straight to their current title.

- 07
Trust before checkout
A 30-day return window, protective packaging, guaranteed first editions and direct customer care, stated plainly before readers reach the cart, with answers grouped by topic in the FAQ.

Outcome
The result.
- Partner attribution runs on Shopify's own discount codes, with no custom app to maintain.
- Handed over with a written guide and a live walkthrough, so Bancroft's team adds partner pages and pulls partner sales reports itself.
- Briefed for one book; a second title was added on the same template at no extra cost.
- The work continues: Bancroft sends new tasks as the store grows, and we upload new products as titles are added.
“Noor built Bancroft Press a professional, expandable Shopify store and went beyond the brief, adding a second book page at no extra cost. Responsive, patient, and knowledgeable. I'm already planning to bring him back for more titles. Highly recommended.”
